Light-Week Sweeps Make Big West Men’s Volleyball Award Winners Out of Mouchlias, Voss and Bloom

  • Dimitrios Mouchlias guided then-second-ranked Hawai’i to the sweep of its two-match conference series at No. 14 CSUN and netted a fifth career Big West Offensive Player of the Week award.
  • The fourth-year junior opposite averaged 4.50 points, 3.50 kills, 1.50 blocks and 1.00 digs per set while serving one ace and hitting .500 (21-2-38) with just two attack errors over 38 attempts.
  • Friday’s opener saw Mouchlias contribute eight kills at a .467 (8-1-15) clip with four block assists, three digs and an ace for 11.0 total points.
  • Mouchlias was the lone player in double-digit kills on Saturday night, putting down 13 at a .522 (13-1-23) rate to go along with a career-high-tying five total blocks (one solo) and three more digs for a match-best 16.0 points.
  • Mouchlias currently leads The Big West and ranks in the top 10 nationally in hitting percentage (.397), kills per set (3.89) and points per set (4.69). With the weekend sweep, UH ascended back to the No. 1 spot in the AVCA poll after just a one-week hiatus.
  • This is a third weekly honor for Mouchlias in this 2023 season, and second in three weeks. The first two came on Feb. 13 and March 13. The native of Soufli, Greece, was previously the offensive recipient on Feb. 7 and April 18 of 2022.

  • Guilherme Voss, now a five-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week, averaged a team-best 1.83 blocks per set as then-No. 2 Hawai’i won all six sets in a weekend series sweep of No. 14 CSUN on the road.
  • The fourth-year junior helped UH record 23.0 total team blocks over the six sets, an average of 3.83 per frame. Voss also provided 1.83 kills per set in hitting .526 (11-1-19) with a solitary miscue on 19 swings.
  • In Friday’s initial matchup in Northridge, Voss went for a match-high five total blocks (one solo), five kills (.500), one ace and a dig for 9.0 points. The 6-foot-7 middle blocker added a match-best six more blocks (one solo), six kills without an error on 11 attempts (.545), two digs and one set assist for 9.5 points in Saturday’s rematch.
  • Voss’ first recognition of 2023 came back on Feb. 13. The Brazilian was previously the defensive award recipient on Feb. 7 and March 14, 2022, as well as on April 12, 2021. Voss was also a league-best three-time Big West Freshman of the Week in 2020.

Men's Volleyball Freshman of the Week

  • Connor Bloom came off the bench to aid No. 4 Long Beach State to the sweep of a home-and-home series with No. 11 USC, picking up a first Big West Freshman of the Week recognition.
  • The redshirt freshman out of Huntington Beach and graduate of Orange Lutheran High School provided several strong serving runs for the Beach, recording an ace and a dig over three sets of action, both coming during Saturday’s 3-1 victory at USC’s Galen Center.
  • Bloom totaled nine service attempts without an error, coming on late in the fourth and final frame Saturday to serve four straight points and get LBSU from down 19-17, to up 21-19. The Beach tallied four of the last six points from there to clinch the weekend sweep of the Trojans.
  • Bloom is LBSU’s first Big West Freshman of the Week for 2023, after former-star-turned-professional Alex Nikolov was an eight-time recipient en route to 2022 Big West Freshman of the Year distinction.
