  • Jano Tello led No. 14 CSUN to a 2-0 week to warrant a first career Big West Offensive Player of the Week recognition.
  • Tello’s match- and career-high 10 kills on 10 swings in a home sweep over Westcliff on Wednesday night set a single-match CSUN record for hitting percentage at a perfect 1.000, edging four Matadors who held the previous mark at .929. Tello added an ace and a match-best three block assists for a career-high 12.5 total points that also led all players.
  • Back in the hometown of San Diego in the Matadors’ 2023 Big West opener on Friday night at UC San Diego, Tello put down five kills with one error on eight attempts (.500) to go with two block assists and one set assist for 6.0 points in the come-from-behind, four-set triumph.
  • This is a first Big West weekly honor of any kind for Tello. Matador Griffin Walters was The Big West Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 6, with another current teammate, Kyle Hobus, getting the award on Feb. 28, 2022. CSUN is 11-5 and a winner of a season-high seven straight. It is the program’s longest streak of success since 2016.

Also Nominated: Hilir Henno (UC Irvine); Ryan Ka (UC San Diego); Brett Sheward (Hawai'i)

  • Cole Hogland aided top-ranked two-time defending national champion Hawai’i to two more home wins to remain a perfect 13-0 and picked up a first career Big West Defensive Player of the Week selection.
  • Hogland averaged 2.17 blocks per set in UH’s two-match series sweep of visiting Long Island University on Wednesday and Friday nights.
  • The Hawai’i native out of ‘Iolani School topped all players with a season-high eight total blocks (one solo) in the series opener, adding four kills on six swings with one error (.500), and a match-high two service aces for a match-best 10.5 total points.
  • Hogland collected five denials in the rematch, all assisted to again lead all players, alongside five more kills without a miscue on six attempts (.833), another ace and a single dig for 8.5 points. The fifth-year junior’s three aces over the two nights also paced Hawai’i.
  • This is a first Big West weekly award of any kind for Hogland. Teammates Brett Sheward (Jan. 16) and Guilherme Voss (Feb. 13) were prior defensive recipients for UH in 2023.
Also Nominated: Kyle Hobus (CSUN)
Josh Schellinger, UC San Diego
Men's Volleyball Freshman of the Week
Redshirt Freshman • Outside Hitter • Bloomingdale, Ill.

  • Josh Schellinger averaged 3.19 points and 3.13 kills per set over two matches for UC San Diego, good enough for a third Big West Freshman of the Week award already.
  • The redshirt freshman outside hitter had 13 kills in a 3-1 setback at former Division II rival Concordia Irvine of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Tuesday night, hitting .417 (13-3-24) with two digs.
  • Schellinger then produced 12 more kills in a first-ever Big West contest as the Tritons opened the conference schedule with another 3-1 loss, this time at home to No. 14 CSUN on Friday. The native of Illinois also got hands to a career-high-tying seven digs, one block assist and a set assist.
  • Schellinger’s 55 total attacks (25-9-55 for a .291 hitting percentage) over the two contests were second-most on the team. The Triton has appeared in all 14 matches, drawing 10 starts, and has reached double figures in kills eight times, all coming over UC San Diego’s last nine dates.
  • Schellinger is now a league-best three-time Big West Freshman of the Week, with prior awards on Jan. 23 and Feb. 20. Teammate Evan Boyle was the season’s first recipient back on Jan. 9 to give the program four.
