Robbins and Medellin of Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton's Sutherlin Earn First Set of Weekly Honors, Presented by Rawlings

30445• Myka Sutherlin made four appearances in the circle during the initial weekend of the 2023 season, starting twice, and fired 15.0 innings with 19 strikeouts to earn a fourth Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week recognition.

• The senior and second-year Pacific transfer had an ERA of 0.93 as reigning Big West champion and preseason favorite Cal State Fullerton went 3-2 for openers. The Titans lost 3-0 at No. 2 UCLA in their first action on Thursday night, with Sutherlin registering the final four outs.

• Sutherlin’s weekend featured a complete-game shutout (2-0) with a career-high 14 strikeouts against Utah State on Friday at the Bruins’ Easton Stadium to give the Titans their first victory of 2023. The right-hander out of Gilbert, Ariz., scattered just a pair of late hits without issuing a walk, facing two over the minimum. An infield single broke up the no-hit bid to lead off the sixth.

• Sutherlin’s prior Big West Pitcher of the Week awards all came last season, on Feb. 28 and then back-to-back on March 21 and March 28.

30441• Carly Robbins hit .538 (7-for-13) with an on-base percentage of .625 over five starts at third base at No. 12 Arizona’s Candrea Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

• The second-year South Carolina transfer who sat out the entire campaign after arriving a season ago, reached base safely in all five contests and had a hit in four. Robbins made a Beach debut on Thursday by going 1-for-1 with two walks, one RBI and seven assists in a win over Kansas.

• The Los Alamitos product went 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch, run and an RBI single in two losses to the host Wildcats, who completed the weekend a perfect 5-0. Robbins added an RBI single on an 0-2 pitch in a victory over NC State, and closed by going 3-for-5 with a run, double and an RBI in LBSU’s rematch with the Jayhawks on Saturday.

• Robbins handled all 14 defensive chances at the hot corner without an error.

30443• Makayla Medellin smacked two home runs and a double en route to slugging .688 during a first weekend of college softball as Long Beach State began its 2023 campaign with a 2-3 mark at the Candrea Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

• Medellin hit the go-ahead homer, a two-run shot to center in the third that broke a 2-2 tie, to lift the Beach to a season-opening 6-5 triumph over Kansas on Thursday. It meant a first collegiate hit for the Yorba Linda native.

• The 2022 graduate of Yorba Linda High School then added another go-ahead two-run blast against the Jayhawks with two gone in the sixth inning of Saturday’s eventual 9-8 loss.

• Medellin completed the weekend with a team-leading (tied) five RBI, batting .250 (4-for-16) with three of those four hits of the extra-base variety, and three runs scored. The outfielder started four games in right and the other in center, notching six clean putouts.
