HONOLULU – Yesterday, the
Big West and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority announced an extension of their wide-ranging marketing partnership which will bring The Big West Men's Volleyball Championship to the island in each of the next two years. The Hawaiian Islands presents the 2024 Outrigger Big West Men's Volleyball Championship begins April 18-20, 2024.
The high-octane championship will feature all six Big West squads with the victor grabbing the league's automatic berth into the 2024 National Collegiate Championship.
First-round play begins on Thursday, April 18, pitting the No. 3 seed against the sixth seed, and the No. 4 seed versus the fifth seed. Day 1 winners advance to take on the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in Friday's semifinal round, with the championship slated for Saturday, April 20.
A conference-sponsored sport since 2018, the 2024 iteration will be the fourth time Hawai'i has hosted The Big West's postseason event. SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center was also announced as the host site for the 2025 championship.
Three schools have earned conference crown in men's volleyball: Long Beach State (2018), UC Santa Barbara ('21) and Hawai'i ('19, '22, '23). Two programs - Long Beach State and Hawai'i - also boast a pair of NCAA titles apiece in that timespan.
In 2023, No. 1 seed Hawai'i pulled off the thrilling victory over No. 3 seed and host UC Irvine, 3-1, in The Big West Championship finale. This match marked the only national collegiate men's volleyball broadcast on ESPN networks prior to the national semifinals. The 'Bows eventually finished the year as national runners-up, falling just short of the three-peat as No.1 UCLA took the title.
2024's national championship will return to the West Coast with Long Beach State hosting the event at Walter Pyramid. The last time the Beach hosted in 2019, they completed a national championship repeat before Hawai'i went back-to-back in 2021 and '22 showcasing the national strength of the league.
