- Clarke Godbold is The Big West Offensive Player of the Week for the first time on the strength of a career-high-tying 17 kills in a come-from-behind 3-1 win for No. 3 Long Beach State at No. 4 Penn State last Wednesday night.
- Godbold hit .286 (17-7-35) to share the match high in kills, and also contributed four block assists and a set assist for a career-best 19.0 total points to lead all players. The result kept the Beach’s record unblemished at 5-0 following a perfect three-match road trip to the East Coast. It also marked the Nittany Lions’ (6-1) first loss of 2023 and snapped their regular-season home win streak at 21.
- Godbold’s other 17-kill output came in a 3-0 home sweep over No. 2 UCLA on Feb. 11, 2022. The third-year junior opposite from San Pedro was the 2021 Big West Freshman of the Year and a 2022 All-Big West First Team and AVCA All-America Second Team selection.
- Godbold was previously The Big West Defensive Player of the Week on Jan. 24, 2022, and the back-to-back-to-back Big West Freshman of the Week on March 29, April 5, and April 12 of the 2021 season. This is LBSU’s first offensive honor of the new campaign.

Simon Torwie, Long Beach State
Men's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

- Simon Torwie posted a career-high-tying eight total blocks, two of them solo denials, in No. 3 Long Beach State’s come-from-behind 3-1 triumph at No. 4 Penn State last Wednesday night in University Park, Pa.
- The third-year junior middle blocker put down a season-best seven kills on 10 swings with a solitary error for a career-best attack rate of .600. The Beach pinned the Nittany Lions (6-1) with their first loss of 2023 and extended their own win streak to five matches to begin the season while wrapping up a perfect three-match trip to the East Coast.
- Alongside the match high in blocks, Torwie added a season-best three digs, one of three LBSU aces, and a set assist, for a season-high 13.0 points. Penn State had taken 21 straight regular-season home contests.
- Torwie is the second Beach student-athlete to earn Big West Defensive Player of the Week distinction in the early going, joining the previous recipient in fellow junior Mason Briggs. The product of the Balearic Islands in Spain garnered a first such award on April 11, 2022. Torwie joined Clarke Godbold on The Big West’s 2021 All-Freshman Team.

Kurt Nusterer, Hawai'i
Men's Volleyball Freshman of the Week

- Kurt Nusterer played in two contests and five sets as No. 1 Hawai’i swept through its three-match trip across the country to North Carolina, averaging 3.00 points, 2.20 kills and 0.80 blocks per set and hitting .714 (11-1-4) to earn a first Big West Freshman of the Week honor.
- The redshirt freshman out of Indianapolis, Ind., and 2021 graduate of Columbus (Ind.) North High School, provided four kills and a first career ace and block assist in Thursday’s 3-0 win in front of a sold-out crowd at Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C.
- With UH again sitting a bulk of its starts on Saturday at a second straight Conference Carolinas foe in Barton College in Wilson, N.C., Nusterer drew a first collegiate start and collected seven kills on eight attempts without an error (.875), to go along with three block assists and another ace for 9.5 points.
- Nusterer began the week with two matches and two sets played. The 6-foot-9 middle blocker is the Rainbow Warriors’ first Big West Freshman of the Week since current teammate and junior All-American Spyros Chakas was the honoree back on March 1, 2021.
