Hawai’i Opens Title Defense with Big West Men’s Volleyball Weekly Awards for Chakas and Sheward Alongside UCI Rookie D’Arcy

  • Spyros Chakas averaged 5.50 points and 5.13 kills per set and hit .485 (41-8-68) in a two-match home sweep over then-sixth-ranked Ball State to earn the true junior outside hitter for top-ranked Hawai’i a first career Big West Offensive Player of the Week award.
  • Chakas, a 2022 All-American and native of Nea Smyrni, Greece, tallied a match-best 19 kills at an attack rate of .405 (19-4-37) during Thursday night’s season opener for the Rainbow Warriors, adding two digs, two set assists and an ace for 20.0 points.
  • In Friday’s second consecutive four-set victory, this one of the come-from-behind variety after dropping the first frame, Chakas wound up with a match-high 22 kills on .581 (22-4-31) hitting, seven digs and two solo stuffs for 24.0 points to again lead all players. The series served as a rematch of the 2022 national semifinal that also went UH’s way in a thrilling five-set comeback. 
  • The 2022 National Collegiate Championship Most Outstanding Player was previously The Big West Freshman of the Week on March 1, 2021. Current teammates Dimitrios Mouchlias (twice) and Jakob Thelle picked up Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors in 2022.

  • Fifth-year junior Hawai’i libero Brett Sheward averaged 3.00 digs per set in a two-match series sweep of No. 6 Ball State en route to a first career Big West Defensive Player of the Week selection.
  • The product of Newport Beach contributed a career- and match-high 17 digs to go with two assists in a come-from-behind four-set win on Friday inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center on O’ahu.
  • Sheward had seven digs and one assist in Thursday night’s season-opening victory, also in four frames, and ultimately did not record a reception error over 47 total attempts for the weekend.
  • Sheward’s current teammate, middle blocker Guilherme Voss, was a two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week a year ago for UH.

  • William D’Arcy provided three kills on five attempts without an error (.600) as No. 7 UC Irvine easily swept visiting Emmanuel College of Franklin Springs, Ga., in its lone match and 2023 home opener on Friday night and garnered a first Big West Freshman of the Week recognition.
  • With UCI off to a perfect 3-0 start to the new campaign, D’Arcy has come off the bench in all three contests and all 10 sets and contributed five kills, two digs and a block. The 6-foot-10 rookie opposite hitter and member of the Australian senior national team is hitting .250 (5-2-12).
  • D’Arcy’s current teammate and fellow opposite hitter Hilir Henno was a five-time Big West Freshman of the Week a season ago.
