Three Long Beach State Standouts and UC San Diego’s McInnes Earn Big West Women’s Volleyball Weekly Recognition

  • Sophomore outside hitter Ava McInnes excelled as UC San Diego split the weekend at home to earn Big West Offensive Player of the Week. The Tustin native compiled 48.0 points and 46 kills, averages of 6.00 and 5.75 per set, respectively, while hitting at a .301 (46-9-123) clip. 

  • McInnes produced match and career highs of 31 kills on 85 swings for 32.0 total points in a five-set loss to Long Beach State on Friday night, attacking at a .282 (31-7-85) rate. 

  • McInnes then also led all players with 15 kills during Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton. It marked UC San Diego’s first Big West sweep of 2022. She hit .342 (15-2-38) in that one, and added three total blocks (one solo) and 14 digs for the weekend. 

  • McInnes is a first-time Big West weekly award winner, and UC San Diego’s first-ever offensive honoree in the program’s second season as a league member. She is the first Triton recognized in 2022.

  • Long Beach State’s Dylan Dela Cruz put together a career performance in the past week en route to Big West Defensive Player of the Week acclaim. The senior libero got to a match-high 34 digs at UC San Diego on Friday night to become the first Beach player to record 30-plus digs in a contest since 2010. Dela Cruz also moved into third in the program’s single-match record book. 

  • The Long Beach product out of Long Beach Poly High School followed that effort with 25 digs to lead all players in another five-set triumph over UC Irvine on Saturday night. Dela Cruz concluded the week averaging 5.90 digs per set and added 11 assists over the two matches. 

  • Dela Cruz has appeared in all 16 matches for Long Beach State, and reached double-digit digs in all but one. 

  • Dela Cruz is now a two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week in 2022, having picked up the season’s first award back on Aug. 29. Dela Cruz is the league’s lone student-athlete with multiple defensive awards.

  • Zayna Meyer set Long Beach State to two more five-set victories over the weekend to claim Big West Setter of the Week. Meyer collected 116 assists, averaging 11.60 per set, while directing the Beach to a .234 hitting percentage. Meyer also produced 2.80 digs, 0.90 kills, 0.80 blocks and 0.20 aces per set, all while herself attacking at an efficient rate of .615 (9-1-13). 

  • The redshirt freshman from Wheaton, Ill., who spent the 2021 season at BYU, posted double-doubles in both contests to give her 10 on the year, including four in a row. 

  • On Friday night at UC San Diego, Meyer upped her single-match career high to 64 assists, having dished out 62 less than one week prior on Oct. 8 versus CSUN. Meyer also added 11 digs, four blocks, three kills and an ace. 

  • In LBSU’s third five-set success in a row on Saturday night inside the Walter Pyramid against UC Irvine, Meyer wound up with 52 assists, 17 digs, four more blocks and another ace, and equalled her highs of six kills and nine points. 

  • Meyer is now a four-time Big West Setter of the Week for 2022, the most of any player. She earned the season’s first two awards on Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, as well as last week’s on Oct. 10, and was also The Big West Freshman of the Week for Aug. 29. The Beach, winners of a season-best four straight, sit alone in fourth in the conference standings.

  • Jaylen Jordan was stellar for Long Beach State over a pair of five-set victories last weekend, averaging 3.50 kills and 2.60 digs per set while hitting .237 (35-13-93) and producing her first two double-doubles to pick up Big West Freshman of the Week honors. 

  • The redshirt freshman outside hitter out of Tarzana first put down a career-best 22 kills at UC San Diego on Friday night, at a rate of .314 (22-6-51), also adding 13 digs and an assist. The attack, hitting percentage, dig and point (22) totals were also all single-match highs. On Saturday night at home against UC Irvine, Jordan collected 13 more kills to go along with 13 digs, three blocks and another assist. 

  • Jordan has reached double-digit kills in seven of the 10 matches she has appeared in this season, including each of the last five to begin the month of October. 

  • Jordan is a first-time Big West weekly honoree, becoming the Beach’s second freshman winner this season, following fellow redshirt freshman and team setter Zayna Meyer back on Aug. 29 to begin the year.
