Senior Gilbert Chung began his final season in a UC Riverside in impressive fashion as he won three singles and three doubles matches to open a four-match roadtrip, and earn Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.
Chung picked up points for the Highlanders at No. 2 singles in three straight wins. UCR blanked Ottawa of Arizona and Arizona Christian, 7-0, and knocked off defending Western Athletic Conference champion Grand Canyon by a 4-3 score.
Chung surrendered only 10 points in his three singles wins, including a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lucas Monterroso of Arizona Christian. He also rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Grand Canyon’s Freddie Grant.
His only singles setback came to the nation’s No. 34-ranked player, Filip Malbasic of Arizona. However, Chung battled to a third set before losing in a super set tiebreaker.
In doubles, Chung teamed with Nabil Abdallah for three more wins. The duo whitewashed Dong Hyun Kim and Jordan Petrie of Arizona Christian, 6-0. They also downed Grand Canyon’s David Weber and Laurent Magne, 6-2.

EMMA BARDET, LONG BEACH STATE
WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Long Beach State sophomore Emma Bardet captured her first career Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award after posting a perfect 5-0 record at the Beach Winter Invitational.
In her three singles wins at the No. 2 flight, she dropped just six games total and won all three matches in straight sets. She earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory against CSUN’s Jacquie Tan.
Bardet nearly bageled Portland’s Neli Sunjic, losing just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. She also breezed to a, 6-1, 6-1, win over Portland State’s Nina Nikitovic.
Doubles was a success as well for Bardet as she and partner Wiktoria Rutkowska notched a pair of wins. The tandem blanked Portland’s Emily Soares and Laura Okazaki, 6-0. They also defeated CSUN’s Ekaterina Repina and Tan by a 6-3 score.
Bardet is 12-3 on the year in tournament singles play.
