Final Softball Weekly Awards Handed Out For 2019

SAMMY FABIAN, UC SANTA BARBARA • SOFTBALL FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• UC Santa Barbara sophomore Sammy Fabian collected her first career Big West Softball Field Player of the Week award after closing out the season on a strong note against rival Cal Poly.

• The outfielder hit at a .583 clip (7-for-12) to help the Gauchos take two out of three from the Mustangs.

• She scored four runs and had three RBIs, accounting for seven of the 18 runs UCSB tallied in the series.

• Fabian’s seven hits in 12 at-bats lifted her average to .404, making her just the third Gaucho ever to bat over .400 in a season.

• In the season finale, a 9-1 victory, Fabian posted the second 4-for-4 game in her career and drove in a season-high two runs on bases-loaded double in the second.

• She also doubled and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in a 5-3 loss. She finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the series-opening 6-5 win.

BROOKE YANEZ, UC DAVIS • SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

• A record-setting season for Brooke Yanez continued as the UC Davis sophomore notched her sixth Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week award for her efforts against Hawai‘i.

• The left-hander finished 1-1 on the week with a 1.15 ERA in two starts, helping the Aggies to their first-ever series win over Hawai‘i in Honolulu.

• Opponents hit just .131 against her in 18.1 innings of work, collecting just eight hits – only one of those in the series finale. She struck out 32 and walked just two in her two appearances.

• Yanez threw 11.1 innings in a 12-inning 2-1 defeat in the opener, tying a school Division I era single-game record with a career high 18 strikeouts. She allowed just one hit through the first seven innings as UC Davis tied the game in the seventh to force extra innings.

• The 18 strikeouts tied for third-most in a Division I game this season according to NCAA statistics.

• Yanez fanned 14 Rainbow Wahine against just one walk in the 5-1 victory in the series finale. She tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit ball before UH broke up the no-hitter and shutout with a home run – the only hit of the game allowed by Yanez.

• She finished the season with a school Division I single-season record 273 strikeouts, good for No. 8 on the Big West single-season list.

DAISY MUNOZ, CAL STATE FULLERTON • SOFTBALL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
1B • Buena Park, Calif. • Los Alamitos HS

• Earning her first Big West Softball Freshman of the Week award, Cal State Fullerton first baseman Daisy Munoz slugged 1.250 in a series sweep of UC Riverside.

• Munoz hit .500 (4-for-8) and walked three times to help propel the Titans to their fourth consecutive Big West title.

• She drove in five RBIs and scored three runs to help the Titans outscore the Highlanders 26-11 for the series.

• After going 1-for-3 with a walk in the opener, Munoz clubbed her seventh homer of the season in the 14-6 victory in game two. She finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

• Munoz blasted her eighth homer of the season in the finale, going 1-for-2 with three RBI in the 7-2 win. She also walked once in all three games.
