A pair of freshmen notched their first career Tennis Athlete of the Week awards on the strength of splendid singles and doubles play.

Jankowiak Leads Highlanders To Three Victories

Freshman Pawel Jankowiak notched six victories in singles and doubles to lead UC Riverside to a 3-0 record and to his selection as Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week.

The Highlanders posted 4-3 victories against Youngstown State and Boston University, and a 6-1 win over Villanova.  Jankowiak was at the center of each win.

He routed his first two opponents – Youngstown State’s Joao Garretto (6-3, 6-3) and Boston University’s Satyajit Simhad (6-1, 6-1).  He then overcame a first set deficit to upend Villanova’s Stefan Suarez by scores of 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 to secure his spot as the No. 1 player in UCR’s singles lineup.

With doubles partner, Vignesh Subramanyan, Jankowiak also went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles.  The duo toppled Villanova’s Thomas Dodson and Tyler Roth, 6-2.

Zeidan Extends Singles Win Streak to 12

Cal State Fullerton freshman Genevieve Zeidan (Taipei, Taiwan/Zhong Xing HS) improved her winning streak in singles to 12 straight as she captured her first career Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honor.

Zeidan leads the Titans with a 13-1 dual singles record as she went 3-0 last week.  She won twice at No. 2 singles, dominating Toledo’s Sidnay Huck (6-1, 6-0) and Boston University’s Remi Ramos (6-1, 6-2).  Moving up to No. 1, she took care of Utah State’s Sasha Pisareva (6-3, 6-3) to give the Titans a 4-2 team win.

She teamed with Masako Makiba to go 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, including a 7-5 win over the Terrier duo.
