Everett Maltby and Criss Rodriguez were the recipients of the weekly tennis awards thanks to their clutch play in three-set matches.

Maltby Leads Aggies Into First Place

Freshman Everett Maltby (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) helped UC Davis overtake first place in the standings with two huge wins in singles, garnering Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Both victories came in three-set battles.  In a 5-2 upset of No. 49 Cal Poly, the Aggies knocked the Mustangs from the first-place perch thanks in part to Maltby’s 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 triumph over Naveen Beasley at No. 5 singles.

Maltby returned 24 hours later to clinch a marathon 4-3 victory over No. 65 UC Santa Barbara, cementing an 8-0 home record for UC Davis this season.  He defeated Erik Johnsson, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 to give the Aggies their 15th win on the year, the most for the program in its Division I era.

Others nominated: Ben Donovan (Cal Poly); Morgan Mays (UC Santa Barbara)

Rodriguez Helps Matadors Win At The Wire

Senior Criss Rodriguez (Van Nuys, Calif./Taft HS) contributed prominently in three CSUN victories, including two in conference play, as she earned Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

Rodriguez won three singles matches, and went 2-1 in doubles with partner Jessica Warren to help the Matadors defeat Cal Poly and UC Irvine to finish the week in a tie for second place in Big West play.

She clinched the 4-3 road victory against Cal Poly, outlasting Hannah Stone in the No. 4 draw in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.  Rodriguez also helped CSUN grab the crucial doubles point with an 8-7 tiebreaker win at No. 3.

Others nominated: Emily Gibbens (Cal Poly); Camille DeLeon (Cal State Fullerton); Karolina Rozenberg (Long Beach State); Ali Facey (UC Irvine)
