Hawai‘i sophomore Montana Martinez (Harbor City, Calif./North Dakota State) led the team to its first victory of the year with an individual runner-up finish at the Chaminade Invitational, earning Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Last season's every-meet leader, Martinez was the top UH finisher for the first time this fall. She finished second in the 5K race on O'ahu's south shore at Kap'iolani Regional Park, posting a time of 18:23.4. Martinez was just 1.5 seconds behind individual champion Johanna Apelryd of Hawai‘i Pacific.
Martinez led a pack of Rainbow Wahine that had all five runners finish in the top-10, pacing UH to the 27-point finish and the win over the all-local field in the team's on-island finale.
