Cal Poly junior Elise Krieghoff tied a league record and Hawai‘i sophomore Storm Kenui did a little bit of everything as the duo earned Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

Krieghoff Ties Big West Mark for Goals in a Match

Cal Poly forward Elise Krieghoff (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS), the nation’s leader in goals per game a year ago, claimed Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors after tying the conference single-game record for goals in a win over Fresno State.

Krieghoff’s five goals in Friday’s 6-1 victory against the Bulldogs tied the Big West mark held by three others – most recently Krystal Sandza of UC Santa Barbara in 2002 – as she upped her league-leading season total to eight.  Krieghoff is the first Division I player to score five goals in a match since Georgetown’s Daphne Corboz had five against Pittsburgh in 2012.

Krieghoff struck in the 11th, 17th, and 38th minutes to give Cal Poly a 3-0 halftime advantage and followed up with two more scores in the 54th and 57th minutes.  Her offensive outburst gives her 40 career goals, making her just the fourth player in Big West history to reach that plateau.  In addition, she now has 12 career game-winning goals to tie her for sixth in conference annals.

The junior added a pair of shots against fourth-ranked Stanford, which has yet to concede a goal this season.  This was Krieghoff’s seventh career Big West weekly honor, tying her for the all-time record with CSUN’s Cynthia Jacobo (2009-12).

Others nominated: Rebecca Wilson (Cal State Fullerton); Tabatha Dickson (CSUN); Mimi Rangel (Long Beach State); Laura McGrail (UC Irvine); Angelisa Cortez (UC Santa Barbara); Sonest Furtado (Hawai‘i)

Kenui Helps Hawai‘i Complete Successful Roadtrip

Hawai‘i Storm Kenui (Honolulu, O’ahu/Moanalua HS) notched Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as she led on both sides of the ball at the Montana Invitational.

Kenui contributed offensively in victories over Eastern Washington (3-1) and the host Grizzlies (2-1) while helping to limit the overall chances by both opponents.

She tallied the game-winning goal against Eastern Washington with a shot just inside the left post in the closing minutes of the first half.  Her play at defensive mid and center back was instrumental in holding the Eagles to just six shots overall and two on goal.

Against Montana, Kenui recorded an assist on UH’s first goal when her hard shot was saved and put back by Sonest Furtado.  The lone Grizzly goal came on a penalty kick in the second half.

Others nominated:  Alyssa Giannetti (Cal Poly); Colleen Ortega (Cal State Fullerton); Leandra Walker (CSUN); Ashton McKeown (Long Beach State); Alana Sooy (UC Irvine)
