UC Riverside freshman Cooper Bridge and Cal Poly senior Jen Cornea notched Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors as both found success in the singles lineup.
Bridge Picks Up Pair Of Wins For Highlanders
UC Riverside freshman Cooper Bridge (Seal Beach, Calif./San Joaquin HS) notched Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after winning a pair of singles matches and a doubles contest.
Bridge led the Highlanders on a four-match trip to Las Vegas and came away with his third and fourth dual singles victories of the young season. He handed Weber State’s Landon Barlow a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 defeat at the No. 4 position in UCR’s 5-2 loss to the Wildcats. Moving up to the No. 3 spot on the singles ladder, Bridge subdued Southern Mississippi’s Vasco Valverde by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Bridge and partner Michael Carella also won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, in a match that UCR narrowly lost 4-3.

Cornea Clutch In Big West Opener
Cal Poly senior Jen Cornea (Anaheim, Calif./Loara HS) earned Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades after winning the majority of her matches at the top spot in singles and doubles.
Cornea was the only Mustang to prevail in both singles and doubles in the Big West opener against Cal State Northridge. Cornea dispatched Criss Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-0, in singles while teaming with Ane McPike in doubles. The duo dropped Rodriguez and Vivian Lin by an 8-2 count, helping Cal Poly capture the doubles point. In CP’s 5-2 loss to Loyola Marymount, Cornea earned a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 win in singles against Jessica Perez.
