
Cal Poly freshman Sierra Hyland (Visalia, Calif./El Diamante HS) starred at both the plate and in the circle as she garnered Big West Softball Field Player and Pitcher of the Week honors.
Hyland hit .417 (5-for-12) with a team-leading two home runs, six RBI and .917 slugging percentage as the Mustangs posted a 3-2 record at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. She hit safely in every game in the lineup while pitching. She blasted a homer and had a career-high four RBI against Texas, and cracked another round-tripper with two RBI versus Syracuse.’
In the circle, Hyland led the Cal Poly staff with victories against Fordham, Maryland and New Mexico. She tossed the program’s first no-hitter in five seasons while fanning a career-best 12 batters in the 4-0 whitewashing of the Terrapins. She also twirled a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts against Fordham.
Hyland completed the tournament with her third win, allowing just three hits and one run with nine strikeouts against the Lobos as the Mustangs won, 6-1.
