UC Santa Barbara junior Tobias Galskov and Hawai‘i freshman Cindy Nguyen went undefeated from their respective singles positions to garner Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades, respectively.

Galskov Posts Consecutive Comeback Victories

UC Santa Barbara junior Tobias Galskov (Lyngby, Denmark/Foothill College) notched Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades with a pair of comeback three-set singles victories.

Galskov found himself trailing after one set in both matches at No. 2 singles, but recovered to win both.  He downed Loyola Marymount’s Felix Van Kann, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch a 4-3 UCSB victory over the Lions.

Currently ranked No. 108 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Galskov collected his third dual victory of the spring season with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 triumph over Arizona’s Kieren Thompson.  His win nearly helped the Gauchos be victorious against the Pac-12 foe, but UCSB eventually fell 4-3.

Others nominated: Kyle Miller (UC Davis)

Nguyen Helps Hawai‘i Gain Conference Win

Hawai‘i freshman Cindy Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) earned Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors with continued solid play from the No. 1 singles position.

Nguyen helped the Rainbow Wahine even their Big West record at 1-1 with a 6-1 triumph at Cal State Fullerton.  Nguyen posted a hard fought 7-6, 6-2 victory against Titan counterpart Morgan McIntosh.  She also teamed with Rebecca Faltusz at No. 2 doubles to knock off CSF’s Kalika Slevcove and Alexis Valenzuela, 8-3.

In a 4-3 loss to No. 61 San Diego, Nguyen defeated Shani Blecher, 6-3, 7-5, to compile her third straight singles win in dual matches.

Others nominated: Julie Gerard (Long Beach State); Sarah Stadfelt (UC Irvine); April Scatliffe (UC Santa Barbara)
