The Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week tied a school career scoring record and the Defensive Player of the Week recorded a pair of shutouts in crucial road victories.
Krieghoff Sets One Record, Ties Another
Building upon an already illustrious Cal Poly career, Elise Krieghoff (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) earned Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors for the eighth time to establish a conference record.
In earning the award, Krieghoff scored her 44th and 45th career goals, which equalled the Cal Poly all-time mark set by Kolleen Kassis (1992-95). Krieghoff’s 45 goals rank No. 2 in the Big West career record book.
The junior wasted no time entering the stat sheet in Friday night’s 2-1 victory at UC Irvine, scoring in the fifth minute. Krieghoff later tallied the game-winning assist. Returning to action Sunday at UC Riverside, she replicated the goal and assist effort to help the Mustangs upend the Highlanders, 3-2.
Krieghoff’s goal, which came in the 82nd minute, was hammered from 30 yards out and landed in the upper right corner for the game-winner. The highlight ended up on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” as part of its Top 10 Plays. The two wins gave the Mustangs six points and helped them into a tie for first place – with 12 points overall – in Big West play.
Others nominated: Rebecca Wilson (Cal State Fullerton); Melissa Lopez (CSUN); Mimi Rangel (Long Beach State); Bianca Frontino (UC Irvine); Tyler Cunningham (UC Riverside)
McKeown Earns Second Straight Defensive Nod
Two clutch performances by Long Beach State goalkeeper Ashton McKeown (Huntington Beach, Calif./Calvary Chapel HS) earned her Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
McKeown registered shutouts in big road victories over Hawai‘i (2-0) and UC Davis (1-0). They represented her sixth and seventh clean sheets of the season. The sophomore stopped five shots against the Rainbow Wahine and made three saves versus the Aggies.
In the last 490 minutes, McKeown has allowed just one goal. She has recorded a shutout in four of her last five contests. After last week’s efforts, McKeown lowered her season GAA to 0.82 and helped extend the 49er unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2).
