Multi-Homer Game Accompanies Starting Lineup Intro For Martinezalt

Cal State Northridge sophomore Adrienne Martinez (Granada Hills, Calif./Kennedy HS) parlayed her first three career starts into the Big West Softball Field Player of the Week award as three of her four hits went for extra bases, including a multi-homer game.

The first baseman helped the Matadors sweep UC Riverside at home and punctuated a solid weekend with two home runs and six RBI on Senior Day Sunday.  Both home runs were three-run blasts to right field and led CSUN to a 12-3 win in five innings.

Martinez became the 27th player in Matador history to notch two home runs in a game.  She also came up just one RBI short of the school record and the two runs she scored represented the first of her career.

She opened the series with a 2-for-3 effort in a 5-1 victory.  She collected her first career double and RBI in the triumph.

The effort by Martinez helped the Matadors to their first Big West series sweep since 2010.  CSUN also reached the 10-win mark in league play, double what it achieved in the 2012 season.

Others nominated:  Gabby Aragon (Cal State Fullerton); Shayna Kimbrough (Long Beach State); Sami Stark (UC Santa Barbara); Jazmine Zamora (Hawai’i)

For the third time in the last five weeks, Long Beach State junior Erin Jones-Wesley (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) captured Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week accolades as she tossed a pair of shutouts against conference foe UC Davis.

The two wins by Jones-Wesley led to a series sweep by the 49ers as they outscored the Aggies 9-1 in three meetings.  LBSU closed out conference play 17-7 to remain in contention for a share of the Big West championship.

Jones-Wesley kicked off the series with a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 victory.  She held a no-hitter into the top of the fourth before surrendering the Aggies' only hit.  Jones-Wesley finished with two walks and six strikeouts in the 93-pitch outing.

In Sunday's  eight-inning victory, Jones-Wesley notched her second consecutive shutout and positioned the 49ers for success until a bases loaded hit by pitch secured the 1-0 victory.  The right-hander allowed five hits and one walk while fanning six as she improved to 19-8 on the season and lowered her ERA to 2.53.

Others nominated:  Desiree Ybarra (Cal State Fullerton); Shelly Tait (Cal State Northridge)
