UC Santa Barbara sophomore Ziad Sultan (Hawalli, Kuwait/American School of Kuwait) earned Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors as he went undefeated in both singles and doubles in a pair of matches.alt

Sultan helped the Gauchos split a pair of home matches last week, defeating Boston College and losing a narrow 4-3 contest to No. 36 San Diego State.  He won both his matches at No. 4 singles and partnered with Mbonisi Ndimande at No. 1 doubles to also win twice.

Against Eagle counterpart Matt Wagner, Sultan swept the match 6-3, 6-2 as the Gauchos went on to take the 5-2 victory.  He and Ndimande got UCSB off to a solid start by clinching the doubles point with their 8-5 triumph on court No. 1.

Sultan did his part to help the Gauchos deliver the upset of the ranked Aztecs.  Sultan and Ndimande were the only Gauchos to claim their doubles match.  Sultan then positioned UCSB for the win with his 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 triumph against Marvin Tawasi that gave his team a 3-2 lead.

Sultan has now won four straight singles matches.

Others nominated: Nils Schuhmann (Hawaii); Daniel Alameh (Pacific)
