UC Davis junior Mary Schroeder (La Cañada, Calif./Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy) received Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week recognition as she helped engineer the biggest upset in program history when the Aggies upended eighth-ranked Hawai‘i in five sets.

Schroeder, who prior to October 2013 had been sparingly utilized as a backup opposite, seized upon an opportunity for a heavier role against UH when starting middle blocker Katie Quinn sustained an injury in practice during the week.  Schroeder produced career highs in both kills (17) and attempts (43) while hitting .302 (17-4-43) in the 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 15-25, 15-9 triumph over the Rainbow Wahine.

Prior to the beginning of conference play, Schroeder had accumulated just 48 kills in her career.  Now she belongs in school lore as UH becomes the highest-ranked opponent that the Aggies have defeated based upon its ranking in the AVCA Division I Top 25.

UH also represented the first Top 10 opponent that the Aggies have faced since a September 2010 meeting with No. 10 California.  In addition, the match took place in front of the largest home crowd (1,309) since a Sept. 27, 2008 home match with Long Beach State (2,012).

Others nominated:  Anna Gorman (Cal Poly); Chisom Okpala (Long Beach State); Ali Spindt (UC Santa Barbara); Emily Hartong (Hawai‘i)
