Cal Poly Produces Sweep of Weekly Cross Country Awards

Thanks to exceptional performances at the Pac-12 Preview, Cal Poly junior Chris Frias and freshman Laura Hollander were named the Big West Men's and Women's Cross County Athletes of the Week.

Frias Leads Mustangs To Fourth Place Finish

Chris Frias (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS) finished eighth overall at the Pac-12 Preview to earn the Cal Poly junior Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.

Frias traversed the 8K course in a time of 24:57 as the Mustangs claimed a fourth place showing at the loaded meet hosted by UCLA at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course.  The Mustangs were bested only by meet champion Northern Arizona (23 points), UCLA (58) and Arizona State (66).

This is the second conference honor this season for Frias, who won the Athlete of the Week award following a second place finish at the UC Santa Barbara Lagoon Open on Sept. 1.

Freshman Hollander Captures Title at Pac-12 Preview

Cal Poly's Laura Hollander ran a sizzling 17:02 to capture the individual title at the Pac-12 Preview, garnering Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.

The freshman's performance on the 5K course at Robinson Ranch Golf Course backed up a record-setting effort on Sept. 1 when she won the UC Santa Barbara Lagoon Open.

Hollander outdistanced UC Davis senior Sarah Sumpter by five seconds for the victory.  The Mustangs finished sixth in the team standings with 117 points.  Hollander outran a competitive field that included No. 27-ranked Texas.
