Cardona, Hollander Sweep Cross Country Weekly Honors For Cal Poly

Senior David Cardona and freshman Laura Hollander registered impressive performances for Cal Poly at the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational, and claimed Big West Men's and Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week accolades for their efforts.

Cardona Top Mustang Finisher at Prestigious Meet

Cal Poly senior David Cardona was selected the Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week after finishing in 71st place against competition from all around the country at the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational.

Cardona's effort helped the Mustangs to a 30th place finish in the 45 team field.  Cardona covered the 8K course in a time of 24:07 to help Cal Poly edge out No. 30 Missouri in the team standings.

The field included 24 teams either nationally ranked or in the "receiving votes" category.

Hollander Wins Loaded Adidas Wisconsin Invitational

Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander set a course record and outclassed a loaded field in capturing Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.

Hollander won the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Friday, posting a record 6K time of 19:33 at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course.  She edged out Iowa State senior Betsy Saina (19:35) by two seconds at the line.  Third place finisher Amber Henry of Weber State recorded a time of 19:43.

The previous course record belonged to Michigan State's Emily MacLeod, who ran a 19:53 in 2010.

Her performance enabled Cal Poly to finish in 32nd place out of 48 teams.  Twenty-eight of those teams were nationally ranked or receiving votes.  The Mustangs finished ahead of such programs as No. 23 Indiana.
