UC Santa Barbara senior Mathieu Forget helped his team to a win over a ranked opponent and UC Davis sophomore Kelly Chui nearly sparked her team to an upset over the nation's 19th-ranked squad, highlighting the efforts for the Big West Men's and Women's Tennis Athletes of the Week.

Forget Wins Three Singles and Doubles Matches In Busy Week
Mathieu Forget (Geneva, Switzerland/College du Leman) played an important role in three UC Santa Barbara victories, including an upset against No. 36 BYU, and earned the Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

The Gauchos had a busy start to the season with five matches in nine days, and Forget won his singles contest in all three UCSB wins.  He downed BYU’s Spencer Smith at No. 2 with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 effort as the Gauchos knocked off the Cougars, 4-2.  Forget also posted a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Gonzaga’s Alvaro Nazal and defeated Hawaii’s Jonathan Brooklyn by a 6-4, 6-4 score.

At No. 1 doubles with partner Mbonisi Ndimande, Forget went 3-1 with wins against teams from Mississippi State, Gonzaga and Hawaii.

Chui Wins Twice In Singles, Defeats Opponent From No. 19 Arizona State
UC Davis sophomore Kelly Chui posted a pair of singles victories and helped the Aggies to a near upset of a top 25 opponent in capturing the first Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award for 2012.

Playing No. 3 singles, Chui rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Northern Arizona’s Nicole Perez as the Aggies won 7-0 in the season opener on Friday.  She also teamed with Megan Heneghan for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

The Aggies came up just short in a battle with No. 19 Arizona State, falling 4-3 to the hosts on Saturday.  Chui did her part in an impressive and convincing 6-0, 6-4 triumph against Hannah James.
