37 Players Selected During 2011 MLB Draft

Thirty-seven Big West Conference players were selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including nine players picked in the final round today.

Long Beach State's Andrew Gagnon was the first to be named, going in the fourth round to the Milwaukee Brewers with the 100th overall pick. Gagnon became the eighth Long Beach State player to be picked in the first three rounds in the last four years, and the fifth pitcher, joining Bryan Shaw, Andrew Liebel, Jake Thompson, and major leaguer Vance Worley.

Big West Champion Cal State Fullerton led all Big West schools with nine selections. Nick Ramirez was the first to hear his named called as the Milwaukee Brewers nabbed the two-way player in the fourth round (131st pick). The next selection went to Tyler Pill, who was picked up by the New York Mets with the 132nd pick. Pitcher Noe Ramriez, who was drafted by the Boston Red Sox with the 142nd pick, rounded out the trio of Titans selected in the fourth round.

UC Riverside witnessed seven players selected in this year's draft, ranking second in the league. Pitcher Matt Andiese was the first Highlander picked, as he was selected in the third round by the San Diego Padres. Cal Poly and UC Irvine had five players selected, while Long Beach State saw four players nabbed. A trio of Gauchos heard their names called, while Cal State Northridge and UC Davis had two picks apiece.
