Malenovska, Cheung and Miller Named Tennis Athletes Of The Week

Long Beach State's Klaudia Malenovska was impressive against a rival adversary while UC Irvine's Ryan Cheung and Kyle Miller of UC Davis led as freshmen.  All three were honored as the Big West Women's and Men's Tennis Athletes of the Week.

Malenovska Improves To 8-1 In Singles With Pair Of Impressive Wins
Long Beach State sophomore Klaudia Malenovska (Bratislava, Slovakia/Haanova 28) dominated the courts with her play in singles and doubles to secure Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season.

Malenovska went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles with teammate Anais Dallara as the 49ers captured victories over Oregon and No. 42 Cal Poly.

In LBSU’s quest to win a fourth straight Big West regular season title, Malenovska helped the 49ers get past the previously unbeaten Mustangs in a conference showdown.  The native of Slovakia topped Ashley Pane by a 6-0, 6-3 score.  In doubles action, Malenovska and Dallara cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Mustang partnership of Alexa Lee and Amy Markhoff.Malenovska also won convincingly against Oregon’s Patricia Skowronski 6-1, 6-2 in singles play.

UC Irvine, UC Davis Freshmen Share Honors
A pair of freshmen collected a share of Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades as UC Irvine’s Ryan Cheung (Irvine, Calif./University HS) and Kyle Miller (Pacific Grove, Calif./Stevenson HS) of UC Davis excelled in singles play against non-conference foes.

Cheung was victorious in three of four singles matches at either the No. 3 or No. 4 position as the Anteaters cruised to team wins against Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s and Portland.  He earned a three-set win against Sacramento State’s Javier Millan by a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 score.

Miller triumphed against Gonzaga’s Kevin Eischen 6-4, 6-2 in a narrow 4-3 team victory against the Bulldogs.  He also notched the lone point in a 6-1 loss at San Francisco, defeating Jacob Hartwig 7-6(5), 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
