Cal State Northridge's Doane, UC Irvine's Kearney Earn Tennis Kudos

Cal State Northridge's Brooke Doane and UC Irvine's Chris Kearney were selected the Big West Women's and Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week after both went undefeated in singles and doubles.

Doane Helps Matadors To Conference Split, Near Upset Of No. 43 Long Beach State

Brooke Doane (Hong Kong/Kamehameha HS) went a perfect 2-0 in both singles and doubles, helping Cal State Northridge split a pair of conference matches en route to Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

Doane helped CSUN to a 7-0 sweep of Cal State Fullerton, posting a straight sets victory at No. 1 singles over Tiffany Mai.  She then teamed with Jennifer Sher at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Titan pairing of Monica Rodriguez and Mai.

The Matadors lost a narrow 4-3 matchup to three-time defending regular season champion Long Beach State, but Doane did her part in the effort to spring an upset.  At No. 2 singles, Doane won a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 battle against the 49ers' Jaklin Alawi.  She and Sher moved to 6-0 in No. 1 doubles play with an 8-5 triumph over LBSU's Anais Dallara and Deborah Armstrong.

Kearney Wins In Singles And Doubles As UC Irvine Bests No. 53 San Diego State

Chris Kearney (Irvine, Calif./North Carolina) contributed heavily to UC Irvine's 6-1 win at No. 53 San Diego State and garnered Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

The junior partnered with Stephen Stege in No. 1 doubles, defeating the Aztec tandem of Hunter Nicholas and Jose Sierra-Short, 8-3.  At the No. 1 singles position, Kearney triumphed by a 6-4, 6-2 score over SDSU's Javier Pulgar.

Kearney has now won four straight singles and four straight doubles matches dating back to February 3, and has not lost a set in that span.  UCI has won a season-high three matches in a row.
