The Big West weekly softball awards had an opposite day as a player known for her pitching prowess won the Field Player of the Week award and a pitcher known for her solid bat won the Pitcher of the Week honor.

Cervantes Explodes Offensively for CSF

Ari Cervantes came up with a huge offensive series for Cal State Fullerton to kick off conference play, netting her the Big West Field Player of the Week award.

After entering the weekend with just two mult-hit games all season, the junior posted two hits in each of the three games against UC Santa Barbara.

To go along with her sizzling .545 (6-11) batting average, Cervantes recorded an RBI in each game, including a pair in the game one victory.

She also proved to be clutch as her third homer tied the game two after UCSB claimed an early lead and a single in the bottom of the seventh plated the tying run in that extra-inning Titan win

Others nominated: Alex Holmes, UC Davis; Marissa Alvidrez, UC Riverside

Alvidrez Almost Perfect for UCR against Cal Poly

Marissa Alvidrez spearheaded UC Riverside’s historic start to conference play last weekend, resulting in Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades.

The senior was brilliant in the circle, not giving up a single run over her 17 innings of work against Cal Poly.

Alvidrez started the series with a complete game two-hitter in UCR’s 10-0 win over the Mustangs.

After a three-inning, three-hit relief stint in game two, Alvidrez closed the series with a complete game four-hitter in the Highlanders’ 5-0 victory.

Alvidrez' dominance in the circle helped UC Riverside to its first 2-1 start in conference play in the program’s Division I history.

Others nominated: Ari Cervantes, Cal State Fullerton; Alex Holmes, UC Davis; Nikki Armagost, Pacific
