The start of a new era and a repeat champion were the themes at the 2010   Big West Cross Country Championships as the UC Davis men and UC Santa   Barbara women claimed the crowns. The races were held at the Ag/Ops   Course in Riverside, Calif., and hosted by UC Riverside.
The Aggie men won their first title in men's cross country at the   Division I level, outlasting the homestanding Highlanders 64-66. It also   marks the first title won by a team other than Cal Poly since 2002,   ending a seven-year Mustang reign. Third place belonged to UC Santa   Barbara with 70 points, while Long Beach State ended up in fourth with   76 points. Fifth place was Cal Poly with 90 points, with UC Irvine   (119), Cal State Fullerton (199) and Cal State Northridge (248) wrapping   up the men's standings.
Individually, Jon Peterson of UC Davis won the men's 8K with a time of   23:40.2, while Chad Hall of UC Riverside was second in 23:57.6. The   Aggies' Calvin Thigpen was next at 24:25.1, while Matt Maldonado of Long   Beach State (24:27.2) and Carl Dargitz of Cal Poly (24:28.2) rounded   out the top five. Next was UCD's Jon Sees at 24:30.6, UC Irvine's Colin   Hacker at 24:31.7, LBSU's Bret Hasvold at 24:37.1 and the UCSB duo of   Juan Paredes (24:38.8) and Isadore Herrera (24:39.6).
The Gaucho women won their second consecutive title and sixth title   since 2003. They finished with 35 points, just two more than Cal Poly.   Third place was registered by Long Beach State with 72 points, while   UC Riverside came in fourth with 117 tallies. UC Davis came in fifth   with 144 points, followed by UC Irvine (149), Cal State Fullerton (154),   Cal State Northridge (207) and Pacific (290).
Amanda Moreno of UC Santa Barbara blazed her way to a course and Big   West record time of 19:57.0, a little over 12 seconds better than the   previous mark held by former Gaucho Danielle Domenichelli (20:09.3).   Moreno's teammate Breanne Strenkowski was second at 20:22.7, while   Crystal Reed made it a 1-2-3 Gaucho finish at 20:26.2. The next two   finishers belonged to Cal Poly as Kayleigh Tyerman was fourth at   20:36.3, while Kelly Barmann was fifth at 20:37.1. Lilyana Morejon of   Cal State Northridge was sixth at 20:41.5, while the Mustangs recorded   the next two finishers in Jenny Bergren (20:46.2) and Rebecca Paddack   (20:51.8). Long Beach State's Rosa Del Toro came in ninth at 20:56.6,   with Andrea Jacobs of UC Santa Barbara rounding out the top ten with a   time of 20:59.3.
