Cal Poly was the big winner of this week's softball awards as the Mustangs had Melissa Pura named the Big West Player of the Week, while Anna Cahn claimed her second straight Big West Pitcher of the Week honor.

Cal Poly's Pura Leads Club to Unbeaten Mark at Mustang Classic

Cal Poly shortstop Melissa Pura (Salinas, Calif./Notre Dame HS) was an offensive machine in leading the Mustangs to a 6-0 showing at the Mustang Classic, netting her Big West Player of the Week accolades.

The senior picked up hits in four of Cal Poly’s six games, all of them being multi-hit outings. She collected two hits apiece against Temple, Sacramento State and Utah State and had four base knocks against the Owls in the tourney finale.

Pura also knocked in three runs twice, one of them coming against the Hornets in a two-homer game for the Mustang All-America candidate. She also collected a RBI in the penultimate game against Temple.

For the week, Pura batted .500 (10-20) with two homers, seven RBI, four runs scored and three walks.

Cahn Claims Back-to-Back Weekly Honors

Cal Poly pitcher Anna Cahn (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) won her second straight Pitcher of the Week award after being virtually unhittable during the Mustang Classic.

The sophomore kicked off her weekend with a nine-inning, two-hit, 10-strikeout gem in a 1-0 win over Temple, then added another win after allowing just three hits and one run over four innings against Sacramento State.

The following day, Cahn put up a perfect game against Utah State, striking out nine over the six-inning 8-0 mercy rule win. She also came on in relief to pick up a save against the Hornets, allowing an unearned run over two innings in Cal Poly’s 4-3 win.

Cahn then finished up her weekend with a 13-inning marathon win over Utah State.  She allowed five hits,  an unearned run, three walks and struck out 13 in the 2-1 Mustang win.

For the week, Cahn went 4-0 with a 0.21 ERA in 34.0 innings, picked up a save and struck out 35. She also allowed just 11 hits, three runs (one earned) and four walks.
