Playing in her first two games as an Anteater, Mikah Maly-Karros (Manhattan Beach, Calif./San Clemente HS) made an immediate impact on the team, which included a double-double performance that led UC Irvine to victory, and earned her Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week accolades.
Maly-Karros, a sophomore transfer from Loyola Marymount, drained 10 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds in 20 minutes of play at Oregon State. She fired a .667 clip from the field and added one block to her total.
Four days later she made her Bren Center debut, posting a game and career-best 28 points and 11 rebounds in UC Irvine's 87-73 win over Eastern Washington. Maly-Karros' was 16-of-23 from the charity stripe, helping UC Irvine set a school and Big West Conference record for most free throws made (45) and attempted (55) in a game. Her performance from the free throw line was also a UC Irvine and Bren Center record for an individual. The Anteaters trailed by 11 against EWU with 6:34 to go in the first half when Maly-Karros scored nine points in a 15-2 run that gave UCI the lead back with 58 seconds to go until intermission.
For the week, Maly-Karros averaged 19.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting .556 from the floor. Her 28 points helped UC Irvine score 87 points in its win over Eastern Washington, a season high and the most points scored by an Anteater ballclub since Jan. 9, 2007.
