Long Beach State's Ashley Lee (La Habra Heights, Calif./Wilson HS) ends the 2009 regular season with her first Big West Women's Volleyball Player of the Week accolade. She becomes the third straight 49er to capture the weekly honor with Naomi Washington and Caitlin Ledoux picking up the award the previous two weeks.
Lee started the weekend by making five kills, 11 digs and 51 assists in a four-set loss to NCAA-participant TCU. She then guided a lineup, featuring four players playing a complete match for the first time, to a four-set win over UNLV, hitting .364 with 16 digs and a career-high four aces.
The following day, Lee hit .385 with 28 assists and 14 digs in a three-set win over LMU, and then hit .417 with five kills and no errors while making 54 assists and 14 digs in a win over Utah. Lee topped 50 assists twice on the weekend and added nine aces, while ranking second on the team in digs and fourth on the team in kills over the course of the two-day tournament.
The junior setter closed out the regular season with four double-doubles in the Mizuno Thanksgiving Classic. Lee averaged 11.38 assists per set and 3.44 digs and made at least five kills in all four matches while leading the 49ers in hitting percentage at .362.
Long Beach State is back in action Friday, Dec. 4 when the 49ers visit eighth-seeded UCLA in the first round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament. The 49ers-Bruins showdown is slated with an 8:00 p.m. start.
