Cal Poly’s Kylie Atherstone received the nod for Big West Volleyball Player of the Week following her performance at the Paso Courtyard Marriott Invitational, marking the 10th weekly accolade of her career.   This week’s honor, which was the second straight week a Mustang collected the weekly award,  gives her sole possession of the top spot in the Big West for multiple player of the week awards.  She entered the 2008 season tied for the top spot in the conference with Danielle Scott (Long Beach State) and Elsa Stegemann (Pacific), both of which concluded their Big West careers with nine selections.

Atherstone guided Cal Poly to a 2-1 week in its home tournament, the Paso Courtyard Marriott Invitational.  In the opening match against Tulane, the senior outside hitter recorded 10 kills and a  season-best .444 hitting percentage.  She also tied a career single-match high with six aces and tallied seven digs and five blocks.  Later that evening against No. 2 Nebraska, she blasted 13 kills while adding six digs and two blocks.  In her final performance against Northeastern, she fired a .318 hitting percentage.

For the week, the Chico, Calif., native led Cal Poly in total kills (34), kills per set (3.78), hitting percentage (.342) and service ace average (1.11).

Others nominated: Julie King (UC Davis), Kelly Fink (UCR), Charlene DeHoog (UC Santa Barbara), Lynda Morales (Cal State Northridge), Mallori Gibson (Pacific) and Quincy Verdin (Long Beach State).
