UC Irvine's
Kate Berrini (Foster City, Calif./Notre Dame HS) scored four goals in three games, including her first career hat trick, earning the junior forward Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors.
The Anteaters went 2-1 on the week with wins against Southern Utah (2-0) and Weber State (3-2), and an overtime loss to Saint Mary's (2-1).
After recording one shot against the Thunderbirds, Berrini opened the UC Irvine Invitational by striking for three second half goals, all in a 14-minute span, in Friday's win against the Wildcats. Berrini scored in the 75th, 84th and 88th minutes, bringing the Anteaters back from a 2-1 deficit. It was the first hat trick by a UCI player since Nicole Bucciarelli achieved the feat on November 1, 1996 against New Mexico. Berrini's three tallies were the most by a Big West player since September 14, 2007 when Dayna Dumont of UC Davis produced a hat trick versus San Francisco.
Berrini knocked in her fourth goal of the week on Sunday in the UCI Invitational finale versus the Gaels. Her 85th minute score occurred with UCI trailing 1-0 and sent the game into overtime.
She was named to the UC Irvine Invitational All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
