The 2008-09 season will mark the 40th year of competition in the Big West Conference.  A 40th anniversary logo has been developed for use throughout the year to celebrate the milestone.

Initially born as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) on July 1, 1969 the organization was renamed as the Big West Conference in 1988.  There is a rich tradition of national success during the Big West’s 40-year history. Current conference members have won nine NCAA national championships including UC Santa Barbara’s most recent Men’s Soccer Championship in 2006.

The conference will add women's water polo to its championship lineup in 2008-09 to bring the total number of Big West sponsored sports to 18.  Men’s championships are conducted in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis and track & field.  Women's championship sports include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball and water polo.
