A pair of first time winners in 2008 were the focus of the weekly softball awards as Cal State Fullerton's Kiki Munoz and UC Davis' Alex Holmes claimed the Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, respectively.

Munoz Sparks Titans to Series Win over CSUN

Cal State Fullerton catcher Kiki Munoz (Orange, Calif./Modena HS) continued to be a key hitter for the Titan offense, leading them to a key series win over Cal State Northridge on the way to Big West Player of the Week honors.

The senior was had two big offensive games in the two CSF victories. In game two of the series, Munoz went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in the 4-3 Titan win. Her home run proved to be the difference as the seventh inning shot gave the visitors a 4-2 lead.

In the 7-0 win in the finale, Munoz collected her fourth three-hit game of the season with a 3-for-3 effort. She also hit another home run, was intentionally walked and collected her fifth multiple hit game in her last seven outings.

For the weekend, Munoz batted .556 (5-9) with two home runs, three RBI, three runs scored and two walks.

Holmes Caps UC Davis Twinbill Sweep with Dominating Effort

UC Davis pitcher Alex Holmes (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) had one of the best performances of her young career against UC Santa Barbara last Saturday, netting her Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades.

The freshman went the distance and the Gauchos, limiting them to seven hits, an earned run, walking none and picking up a strikeout while facing just eight hitters over the minimum in the 4-1 win.

Holmes' start was even more impressive considering that UCSB came into the game averaging 4.2 runs and 7.6 hits, while hitting 33 home runs.
