A pair of repeat winners claimed the Big West weekly softball honors as Tisha Duran of UC Santa Barbara and Brooke Turner of Long Beach State claimed the player and pitcher of the week awards, respectively.

Duran Claims Second Weekly Honor of 2008

UC Santa Barbara infielder Tisha Duran (Ventura, Calif./Ventura College) claimed her second weekly Big West honor of the season posting an impressive week at the dish for the Gauchos.

The senior's week kicked off with a couple of hits, a homer and two RBI in a doubleheader against national power UCLA, then continued with a couple more RBI, a double and a run scored in a twinbill sweep of Cal State Bakersfield.

Duran saved her best for UCSB’s conference-opening series against UC Riverside. In the opener,  Duran walked twice and scored twice in the Gauchos’ tight 7-6 win, then knocked in three runs and added a homer in the second game of the three-game set. She wrapped up the series with a 2-for-3, two RBI effort in the finale to aid the Gauchos to a 3-1 win.

For the week, Duran batted .381 (8-21) with two homers, nine RBI, six runs scored and a pair of doubles and walks.

Others Nominated: Anna Cahn, Cal Poly; Micah Putnam, Cal State Northridge; Brooke LeSage, Long Beach State; Marissa Alvidrez, UC Riverside

Turner Approaches History with Sixth Pitcher of the Week Award

Long Beach State pitcher Brooke Turner (Buena Park, Calif./Kennedy HS) claimed her sixth Pitcher of the Week award after leading the 49ers to a pair of wins in their conference-opening sweep over UC Davis.

The freshman won both of her starts against the Aggies to move to 16-4 on the season. In her first start, Turner went the distance and allowed just four hits, walked no one and struck out eight in LBSU’s 1-0 victory. In the series finale, Turner allowed only two hits off UCD bats, and again walked no one while striking out seven.

Turner's sixth Big West weekly pitching award leaves her one shy of the all-time mark set by her sister Michelle in 2006.

Others Nominated: Anna Cahn, Cal Poly; Mercedes Lovato, Cal State Northridge; Tami Weston, UC Santa Barbara
