Therp Helps Gauchos To Victory Over UC Irvine

UC Santa Barbara sophomore Philip Therp (Birkeroed, Denmark) earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after winning two matches in his team's 5-2 victory at No. 53 UC Irvine on Mar. 8.

Therp defeated UC Irvine senior Victor Lamm at the No. 2 singles position by scores of 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.  At No. 1 doubles, Therp joined forces with Jack Hui to edge the UCI duo of Alex Sundling and Khunpol Issara, 8-6.

The Gauchos improved to 4-4 on the season with the victory.


Bengson Triumphant Against Big West Competition

Long Beach State senior Stephanie Bengson (Albion Park, NSW, Australia) captured Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades after posting a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles against league foes UC Davis and UC Irvine.

The 49ers defeated the Aggies and No. 47 Anteaters by identical 6-1 scores as Bengson played a vital role in each team win.

She defeated UCD's Robin Guier 6-2, 6-2 on Friday and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph against UC Irvine’s Inna Agababian.

In doubles action, Bengson and teammate Hannah Grady dominated at the No. 1 position.  The duo won 8-1 against the Aggies’ Robin Schuler and Desiree Stone.  Against UCI’s Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin, Grady and Bengson were victorious by an 8-1 score.

Bengson is now 7-4 in dual singles and 9-2 in dual doubles matches on the season.
