Pacific's Starke Goes Undefeated For Week in Singles and Doubles

Junior Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) went undefeated in four matches for Pacific, including two wins against a conference opponent, earning him Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for a third time in his career.

At No. 2 singles, Starke came back from a set down to defeat Lucas Tirelli of Saint Mary's by scores of 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.  Starke then teamed with David Gonzalez at No. 1 doubles in an 8-2 triumph over the Gael duo of Joel Kusnierz and Marek Dvorak.  Starke did all he could to lead his team to victory, but the Tigers fell, 4-3, to the Gaels in a close match on Feb. 16.

Pacific righted the ship one day later in an impressive 6-1 win over Big West foe UC Riverside.  Once again, Starke was unbeaten in his two matches, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Gorjan Kovacevic in singles and combining with Gonzalez for an 8-6 win against the Highlanders' Joe Cartledge and John Park.

Starke is now 3-1 on the year in both singles and doubles play.

Brymer Earns Decisive Singles Win Against No. 67 Cal Poly

Cal State Northridge junior Victoria Brymer (Apple Valley, Calif./University of Washington) impressed in her home debut as she won the decisive singles match against No. 67 Cal Poly to garner Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.

Brymer, a two-year starter at Washington, transferred to Northridge for her junior season and already is paying dividends.  She overcame a first-set deficit to 2007 All-Big West First Team Brittany Blalock, coming back to defeat Blalock 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and giving the Matadors a 4-3 victory.

The win moved Northridge to 3-0 on the season, including a 2-0 start to league play.

Brymer split a pair of doubles matches with two different partners on the week.  At No. 1 doubles, she teamed with Canna Furuta to win 8-3 over UC San Diego's Ina Dan and Taskeen Bains.  She did not play singles in CSUN's 7-0 sweep.  Against Cal Poly, Brymer paired with Kristy Fournell in an 8-5 loss to Blalock and Steffi Wong, the No. 20-ranked doubles team in the nation.

Brymer is a combined 4-1 in singles and doubles early in the season.
