For the second straight week, Cal Poly walks away with the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors. Last week Kristina Santiago earned the conference's weekly accolade and now this week teammate Lisa McBride is tabbed player of the week after leading the Mustangs to a 2-0 week. This is McBride's third weekly award of her career.
Thanks in part to McBride's effort last week, Cal Poly is off to a 7-4 start for the first time in three years and only the second time since the 1977-78 campaign. The Mustangs, led by the 6-2 guard, handed Illinois-Chicago its first loss of the season on its home court with a 72-60 victory. In the win, McBride drained 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished five assists. Two days later in the win over Eastern Washington, the Tucson, Ariz., native added 14 points, three rebounds and three assists to her weekly total.
For the week, McBride fired a .632 field goal percentage and averaged 16.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest. She was also 12-for-19 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Cal Poly, who played its final contest in 2008 on Dec. 20, is idle until the new year. The Mustangs kick off 2009 hosting UC Riverside in its first conference matchup of the 2008-09 season.
Others nominated: Lauren Chow (Cal State Fullerton), Jasmine Erving (Cal State Northridge), Paige Mintun (UC Davis), Kemie Nkele (UC Riverside), Amber Simmons (Pacific)
