UC Irvine Men's Golf Sits In 21st After Opening Round of NCAA West Regional

The UC Irvine men's golf team is in 21st place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional at the ASU Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz. on Thursday.

The Anteaters shot a 1-over total of 289 to tie Nevada for 21st. UCLA is in first place after tallying a 20-under 268. South Carolina is second at 15-under 273 while Arizona State and New Mexico are tied for third at 13-under 275.

Senior Jay Choe had UCI's best round of the day, firing a 2-under 70 on the par-72, 7,057-yard course for 40th place. Senior Brian Edick also shot under par with a 1-under 71 for 55th place. Freshman John Chin and Sean Shahi are tied for 99th place at 2-over 74 and sophomore Tim Cha had a 4-over 76 for 121st.

Cal Poly freshman Geoff Gonzalez and Pacific senior Thomas Petersson, competing as individuals, also opened West Regional play Thursday. Petersson shot a 1-under 71 for 55th place, while Gonzalez carded a 2-over 73 to tie for 85th with 13 other golfers.

Eighteen more holes of golf are scheduled for both Friday and Saturday. The top 10 teams from the 27-team field advance to the NCAA Championships.
