A marathon four-hour match between No. 3 seed Cal State Northridge and No. 6 Pacific ended in a 4-3 victory for the Matadors as they reached the Big West Tournament women's tennis semifinals for the second straight year.

The deciding point occurred at No. 4 singles as CSUN's Ana Matijasevic edged Helen Schneider in three sets with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 triumph.

Cal State Northridge moved to 11-6 on the year and will meet No. 2 seed Long Beach State Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Pacific concluded the 2007 season at 8-14.

After Northridge won the doubles point, Pacific battled right back to take the lead with strong play from the bottom of its lineup in singles. At No. 6, Clara Schuhmacher defeated Kasia Krasinska 6-3, 6-4 and Carla Tamborini notched a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Sonya Kumar at No. 5.

CSUN tied the match at 2-2 as No. 3 player Canna Furuta topped Svenja Arens 6-4, 6-4. The Matadors reclaimed the lead when Silvia Gutierrez outlasted Vana Mrazovic in a hard fought battle, winning 7-5, 7-6 (2).

However, the Tigers would not go down easily, leveling the match at three points apiece with a win at No. 2. Jolanta Twarowska snapped Kanykey Koichumanova's 13-match winning streak, and did so in comeback fashion. She won 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

No. 5 Cal Poly became the first lower-seeded team to pull out a win at the Big West Tennis Championship as the Mustangs beat No. 4 UC Santa Barbara 4-0 in women's quarterfinals action at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday.

Cal Poly improved to 8-11 on the year while UCSB fell to 10-11 in its final match of the season.

The Mustangs gained the momentum by winning the crucial doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 3 doubles, Maria Malec and Diana Filip went to a tiebreaker to defeat UCSB's Tova Hausman and Brittany Kausen 9-8 (5). UCSB won at No. 1 doubles and Cal Poly at No. 2 to set up the deciding battle at No. 3.

An injury to regular No. 2 player Carina Bjornstrom forced the Gauchos to move everyone up a position for singles play. Charlotte Scatliffe, who took over at No. 2 for UCSB, dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Wong.

Cal Poly also won matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. At No. 3, Shannon Brady breezed to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Asagi Onaga. Filip posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hausman at No. 4.

The Mustangs will play top-seeded UC Irvine in the semifinals Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - No. 2 women's seed Long Beach State cruised to a 6-0 victory versus seventh-seeded Cal State Fullerton in Big West Tennis Championship action at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday morning. The 49ers moved to 15-8 on the year while the Titans concluded the 2007 season at 6-16.

Long Beach State has now won 10 consecutive Big West Tournament matches dating back to 2004.

The 49ers clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. The No. 3 duo of Sandra Rocha and Rachael Porsz downed Jerusha Cruz and Katrina Domela 8-4. Hannah Grady and Jessica Weeks defeated Shelly Injejikian and Cheyenne Inglis 8-5 at No. 2.

LBSU had little trouble in singles play, winning all of its matches in straight sets. Williams was the first to finish at No. 2, defeating Mai-Ly Tran 6-3, 6-2. Rocha knocked off Inglis 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5, while Weeks clinched the match for the 49ers with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Injejikian.

With the match officially over, both teams continued to play and Long Beach prevailed at No. 6 and No. 1 to make the final score 6-0.

LBSU will meet either No. 3 Cal State Northridge or No. 6 Pacific in Saturday's semifinals at 3:00 p.m.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - No. 1 women's seed UC Irvine rolled to a 4-0 win against eighth-seeded UC Riverside in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tennis Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Friday morning. The Anteaters improved to 21-3 while the Highlanders finished their season with a 7-12 record.

UCI picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Ali Borowicz and Jayme Hu blanked Catrisha Cabanilla and Anne Marie Simonsen 8-0 at No. 3. Becky Bernhard and Clare Fermin defeated Erynne Oki and Donna McCullough 8-4 at the No. 1 spot.

The Anteaters moved everyone up a spot on the singles ladder when No. 2 player Inna Agababian suffered an injury during doubles play. The change did not affect their momentum as Fermin, who took over at No. 2 singles, won her match after H.R. Espiritu retired due to injury. Fermin had won the first set, 6-2.

Heidi Kaloi followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 over Yasaman Sakhakorn. The Anteaters finished out the match at No. 5 when Borowicz beat Cabanilla 6-1, 6-1.

UCI will meet either No. 4 UC Santa Barbara or No. 5 Cal Poly in Saturday's semifinals at 3:00 p.m.
