UC Irvine's Ulukan Twice Rallies To Overcome Deficit

UC Irvine senior Mustafa Ulukan (Istanbul, Turkey) captured the final Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week award of the season as he came back from a set down in both of his singles matches to win.

Ulukan competed at No. 2 singles against Eastern Washington's Kyle Schraeder and fought back after losing the first set 2-6. He won the last two sets 6-3, 6-3 to help the Anteaters beat the Eagles 5-2. He moved down to No. 3 singles in a match against No. 23 Boise State. Ulukan picked up the lone point for UCI in the 6-1 loss, defeating Blake Boswell 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles action, Ulukan remained perfect on the week. He teamed with Aaron Yovan at the No. 1 spot to win a couple of close matches. Against the EWU duo of Patrick Millican and Jonathan Davis, the Anteaters pulled out a 9-7 win. The UCI duo then downed the BSU tandem of Piotr Dilaj and Luke Shields by an 8-6 score.

UC Irvine's Bernhard Earns Sixth Honor of the Season

UC Irvine junior Becky Bernhard (Roseville, CA) added to her growing collection of Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week awards, collecting her sixth honor of the season and UCI record ninth of her career.

Bernhard improved to 6-1 in the Big West at No. 1 singles as she defeated UC Riverside's Erynne Oki 6-2, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles, Bernhard partnered with Heidi Kaloi to win 8-3 against the Highlander duo of Eri Yoshimoto and Oki.

The nine career awards eclipses the previous record of eight shared by former women's tennis player Anna Bentzer and men's basketball player Jerry Green.
