The Big West weekly softball honors featured a pair of firsts as Cal State Northridge's Christina Saenz and Cal State Fullerton's Brooke Weekley claimed their first Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week award of the season, respectively.

Saenz Slams CSUN to Series Win Over UCSB

Cal State Northridge designated player Christina Saenz (San Jose, Calif./Leland HS) had a big hand in the Matadors' series win over UC Santa Barbara last weekend, netting her Big West Player of the Week honors.

The freshman started the series with a bang as she drove in all five CSUN runs with a grand slam and a run scoring double in the 5-1 victory over the Gauchos. She followed up that effort with a pair of hits and two more RBI in game two as Cal State Northridge rallied from a 7-0 deficit to win the contest, 9-8.

For the week, Saenz batted .455 (5-11) with a home run, seven RBI, two runs scored and two doubles. She picked up two multi-hit games in the three game set and is hitting .357 on the season, second best on the Matador squad.

Weekley Shuts Down League-Leading Pacific

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Brooke Weekley (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) made her first start in almost a month count as she shut down the Pacific offense on the way to the Big West Pitcher of the Week award.

The senior, who’s last start came March 27 against Loyola Marymount, went the distance and allowed just eight hits and one run to pick up the win over the Tigers. Pacific, who is hitting over .300 as a team, stranded eight runners on base, walked just twice and struck out five times against Weekley, including a strikeout with the bases loaded in the seventh to end the game.
