Pacific's Starke Defeats Ranked Foe From Cal Poly

Pacific sophomore Moritz Starke (Bamberg, Germany) earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for Feb. 26 – Mar. 4 with a win over No. 97-ranked Matt Baca of Cal Poly. In a close match, Starke picked up the Tigers' lone point with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory.

UC Irvine's Bernhard Adds Fourth Athlete of the Week Honor To Collection

UC Irvine junior Becky Bernhard (Roseville, CA) picked up her fourth Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor in 2007 as she played a huge role in helping the Anteaters defeat rival Long Beach State in a showdown for first place on Thursday, March 1.

Bernhard, ranked No. 81 nationally, downed No. 54 Hannah Grady in No. 1 singles by a 6-2, 6-4 score to put the Anteaters up 3-2 in a match that they eventually won 4-3. Bernhard also partnered with Clare Fermin to notch a 9-7 win over Stephanie Bengson and Katy Williams that clinched the crucial doubles point for UCI. UCI improved to 5-0 against Big West competition with the win.

In her only other action of the week, Bernhard again teamed with Fermin to defeat the UC Davis No. 1 doubles team of Jenna Kappel and Herzyl Legaspi 8-5.
