Cal Poly's Lisa Modglin and Cal State Fullerton's Candice Baker became the first repeat winners of the Big West weekly softball honors as Modglin took home the Player of the week and Baker was honored as the Pitcher of the Week.
Cal Poly's Modglin Garners Second Straight Player of the Week Honor
Cal Poly outfielder Lisa Modglin (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley HS) took home her second Player of the Week award in as many weeks after leading the Mustangs to a 3-2 showing at the Worth Invitational.
The senior picked up leadoff homers in Cal Poly's wins over Oklahoma State (2-1) and ninth-ranked Stanford (6-2), her seventh and eighth home runs of the season. She also picked up two more hits against the Cardinal, missing the cycle by a triple.
She also picked up hits against San Diego State, Nevada and Texas Tech, extending her team-best hitting streak to 12 games.
For the week, Modglin hit .421 (8-19) with two home runs, three RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and a triple. She also added a stolen base and didn't commit an error over the five games.
Cal State Fullerton's Baker Dominant at Worth Invitational
Cal State Fullerton pitcher Candice Baker (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress HS) picked up her second Pitcher of the Week award after turning in three outstanding performances at the Worth Invitational.
The senior started her tournament with a ho-hum effort against #9 Stanford with nine strikeouts on the way to her first career no-hitter in the Titans' 1-0 win.
She followed that showing with two more complete games, allowing just four hits, an unearned run and 11 strikeouts against two walks in CSF’s 4-1 win over Nevada and 1-0 victory over #11 Oregon State.
For the week, Baker pitched all 21.0 innings in the three games she appeared in, striking out 20, walking seven, allowing four hits, an unearned run and an .060 opponents’ batting average.
