UC Irvine's Bernhard Takes Down Another Ranked Foe
UC Irvine junior Becky Bernhard (Roseville, CA) was selected Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row, and fifth time in her career, after going undefeated in singles and doubles.
Bernhard earned a 5-7, 6-4, 10-2 triumph over San Diego State's Eliska Krausova, who is ranked No. 69 in the FILA Collegiate Tennis rankings. It marked the second straight week that Bernhard defeated a nationally ranked player, as No. 22 Bianca Dulgheru of Pepperdine was her victim the week before. Bernhard started the week with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kana Aikawa. The No. 1 singles player has now reeled off five straight wins.
Along with partner Clare Fermin, the duo posted a 2-0 record at No. 1 doubles as well. They toppled Krausova and Holly Bagshaw 8-6 to help the Anteaters earn the doubles point and defeat the Aztecs 7-0. In the 7-0 rout at Hawai'i, Bernhard and Fermin won 8-3 against Aikawa and Sophe Kobuch.
