Career-best performances by Cal Poly's Megan Harrison and UC Irvine’s Angie Ned secured them of Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors, for the week ending Feb. 4. This is the second consecutive week a Cal Poly athlete has earned such accolades, while UC Irvine picks up its first of the season.
In the Mustangs' 69-60 win over UC Davis, Harrison posted the highest single-game point total by a Cal Poly player since Dec. 30, 1996. Her career-best 29 points were also the most by a Mustang against a Division I school since Cal Poly reclassified to Division I back in 1995.
An explosive .625 field goal percentage (10-for-16) marked the highest single-game total since going 7-for-10 on Dec. 2 as Cal Poly won its season-best third straight game. Along with her 20 points from the field, the Dripping Springs, Texas, native drained an additional nine buckets from the charity stripe.
Senior guard Angie Ned recorded her first two career double-doubles last week in matchups against Pacific and Cal State Northridge. In the 62-54 win over the Tigers, Ned collected her first of two double-doubles with 29 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She grabbed her second double-double in Saturday night’s loss to Cal State Northridge after pouring in 20 points and grabbing 10 boards.
The Moreno Valley, Calif., native added a season-high four assists. For the week, she averaged 24.5 points and 11.0 rebounds, while shooting 90 percent from the free throw line.
Both teams return to action Thursday evening when UC Irvine entertains UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly travels to Long Beach State. Tip off for both contests is slated for 7:00 p.m.
