Contreras, Ulukan and Blalock Named Tennis Athletes of the Week

Contreras and Ulukan Share Weekly Tennis Honors

UC Riverside's Mark Contreras (Temple City, CA) and UC Irvine's Mustafa Ulukan (Istanbul, Turkey) were named Big West Men's Tennis Co-Athletes of the Week after both went undefeated in singles and were part of a doubles team that upset a nationally ranked opponent.

Contreras went 2-0 at No. 1 singles for the Highlanders. He defeated UC San Diego's Bijan Moallemi 6-3, 6-4 as part of a 4-3 team win over the Tritons. He helped UCR to a 6-1 team win over UC Davis by defeating Mike Chin 6-2, 6-2. In No. 1 doubles, Contreras teamed with freshman Jon Calienes to beat Daniel Elefant and Jayce Fitch, who are ranked No. 41 in the nation, by an 8-5 score.

Ulukan played in one match for the week against a common opponent in UC Davis. He defeated Dan Elefant at the No. 4 singles position by a 7-5, 6-2 score. At No. 1 doubles, Ulukan and partner Aaron Yovan recorded another upset of the Aggie duo Elefant and Fitch, winning 8-2. It was the third straight doubles win for Ulukan and Yovan.

Blalock Picks Up First Career Honor

Cal Poly freshman Brittany Blalock (Indian Wells, CA) earned Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after winning matches and No. 2 singles and doubles.

Blalock swept through a 6-0, 6-0 match against Mai-Ly Tran of Cal State Fullerton as the Mustangs picked up a 7-0 win over their Big West foe. She also downed Jessica Hoath of Saint Mary's by a 6-2, 7-5 count, although the Mustangs lost 4-2 to the Gaels.

Blalock and partner Diane Filip won 8-2 over the Cal State Fullerton duo of Shelly Injejikian and Cheyenne Inglis.
