Cal Poly junior Dawin Whiten (North Hills, CA/Monroe HS) and Long Beach State senior Aaron Nixon (Cleveland, OH/San Bernardino Valley College) were named Big West Men's Basketball Co-Players of the Week as both came up clutch.
Whiten, a 6-3 guard, scored a career-high 31 points in Cal Poly's 89-80 home win over UC Irvine on Saturday. He tied a school record with eight three-pointers made, including six in the first half. Whiten made 9-of-13 shots overall in 33 minutes. The performance was even more impressive considering he had missed Thursday's game versus Long Beach State with an ankle sprain. Whiten's exceptional shooting allowed the Mustangs to win for the sixth time in their last eight games.
Nixon added another thrilling moment to his growing résumé of big shots as he hit the game-winner with four-tenths of a second left in LBSU's 68-67 comeback win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Nixon stole the ball from UCSB with 22 seconds remaining to set up his heroics. The 6-2 guard scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half to help the 49ers surmount a 10-point halftime deficit. The buzzer-beating shot was his second this year and the third of his 49er career. On Thursday, Nixon contributed a team-high 26 points in an 80-77 win at Cal Poly. He drained five threes while adding four assists and a career-high seven steals.
For the week, Nixon averaged 20.0 points, 3.0 assists and 5.0 steals per game.
