After strong showings at the NCAA West Region meet, nine Big West cross country runners were named All-Region it was announced today.
On the men's side, #22 Cal Poly claimed four of the five male honorees as Phillip Reid, Jeff Lease, Troy Swier and Evan Anderson garnered the accolades. Reid, the 2007 Big West Athlete of the Year, was the highest finisher for Cal Poly, crossing the finish line in 30:26.75. Jeff Lease was 20th overall after finishing the 10K course in 30:40.15, while Troy Swier (22nd - 30:41.60) and Evan Anderson (23rd - 30:45.80) also claimed top 25 finishes. The other male recipient of All-Region honors was UC Riverside's Ulices Pina, an individual qualifier for the the NCAA Championships. Pina, who is the first male athlete in UCR history to qualify for the NCAA meet, led the Highlanders with a 19th place showing, crossing the finish line in 30:39.60.
The women's end saw #26 UC Santa Barbara claim three of the remaining four honorees. Megan Lewis, Bethany Nickless and Liza Hitchner led the Gauchos to a fifth place finish and a return to the NCAA Championships as an at-large participant. Lewis completed the 6K course in 20:47.35, good for 12th place, while Nickless finished a spot behind her teammate with a time of 20:48.70. Liza Hitchner was 24th with a time of 21:07.35.
UC Riverside also claimed a spot on the women's All-Region team as Brenda Martinez led the Highlanders to an 8th place finish. Martinez, who became the first female athlete to earn an NCAA bid, finished 22nd with a time of 21:02.84.
All-Region honors are given to an athlete who finishes in the top 25 at their respective regional meet and whose team is a member of the USTFCCCA.
